New Tiger Wellness Center at Wasco High

On January 10th, the Wasco High School Tiger Wellness Center officially opened its doors on Saturday, January 10, with a grand opening ceremony. S.T.R.I.P.E.S. Coordinator Allie Rios welcomed close to one hundred Tiger families, students, staff and distinguished guests. She shared “Today is a truly special day for Wasco High School as we gather not only to open a new space on campus but to celebrate the spirit of community, unity, support and compassion that defines our town.” 

Wasco High Principal Rusvel Prado stated “The Tiger Wellness Center represents our commitment to supporting the whole child at Wasco High School. This space will provide students with access to clothing, food, hygiene products, and a safe place to connect with our counseling team and social workers. We are grateful to the Kern Family Health Care Grant Team, our S.T.R.I.P.E.S. Committee, and especially Allie Rios, Angie Cortez and Kourtney Johnson for the countless hours they dedicated to making this resource a reality. It’s a great day to be a Tiger.”

Every student will have access to free clothing, shoes, hygiene products and nutritious food without questions or judgment. Tigers can schedule a confidential appointment to have their needs met. Rios explained that many Wasco families work long hours in demanding jobs, making countless sacrifices for their children. Yet Wasco is a family that supports one another and the TIger Wellness Center is another example of this in action. Prior to the Grand Opening, the Tiger Wellness Center had already serviced over 20 students. In addition to school and interview clothes, Tilly’s Closet offers outfits for Snowball (Wasco High’s prom) and professional attire for interviews. Wasco High Board Member John Steward was in attendance and commented “Honestly what struck me the most about the Tiger Wellness Center is the prom dresses and matching shoes. If just one girl can now go to the prom because these dresses and shoes are available for them…what an impact!”

Founded in 2022, the Wasco Union High School S.T.R.I.P.E.S. program was created to highlight positive student performance. It rewards students who consistently excel in various categories of campus life and encourages behaviors that will benefit students throughout their time at Wasco High and into their lives beyond high school. It has become a valuable component of the culture at Wasco High. The Wasco High School S.T.R.I.P.E.S. program received a $50,000 Kern Family Health Care (KFHC) Grant which helped make the dream of a confidential wellness center on campus a reality. Rios expressed appreciation for KFHC believing in the vision and stated that their “generosity, dedication, and compassion have transformed an idea into something real and powerful.” 

Kern Health Systems Health Education Public Health PT Vanessa Perez commented: “Working with KFHC as a liaison for the School Wellness Grant, which is awarded to ten schools across Kern County, has been an eye-opening experience. As a future educator, I value the importance of understanding the community I serve, and this grant has allowed me to build meaningful connections with schools across Kern County. Wasco Union High School is deeply committed to student success and community engagement. Through their S.T.R.I.P.E.S. program and the support of KFHC’s School Wellness Grant, the school has expanded nutrition education and increased support for students and families. Over the past year, Allie Rios, Angelica Cortez and Kourtney Johnson worked tirelessly to gather essential items, including hygiene products, clothing, shoes, socks, and more for their Tiger Wellness Corner, a judgment-free space offering these essentials for free to their students. Their efforts included collecting over 200 pairs of shoes and more than 100 pairs of socks this past year. It has been inspiring to see this grant workplan come to life. I was honored to participate in the Tiger Wellness Corner’s grand opening by presenting KFHC’s Rethink Your Drink nutrition presentation to staff, students, families, and members of the community, alongside my colleague, Rebeca Santiago. We look forward to continuing our support of Wasco Union High and the Wasco community in the year ahead!

The Grand Opening celebration included care-related information booths, the Omni mobile clinic, lunch and the Rethink your Drink presentation by KFHC. Tilly the Tiger posed for pictures with those in attendance and Wasco High Link Crew and S.T.R.I.P.E.S. recipients were on hand as volunteers. Before administrators, students, S.T.R.I.P.E.S. committee members and representatives of KFHC cut the ribbon, Rios concluded “As we cut this ribbon today, we not only open a door, but a future filled with dignity, opportunity, and compassion for all students at Wasco High School.” 

“Saturday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Tiger Wellness Center underscores the district’s ongoing commitment to supporting the whole child. The center will provide Wasco High School students with access to essential resources that promote both academic success and overall well-being. The district is grateful to Kern Health Systems for its $50,000 grant and to Mrs. Rios for her leadership in advancing this initiative, as well as to the S.T.R.I.P.E.S. team, school staff, and community partners whose collaboration made this resource possible” said Wasco Union High School District Superintendent Kevin Tallon.

El 10 de enero, El Centro de Bienestar Tiger de la Wasco High School abrió oficialmente sus puertas el sábado 10 de enero con una ceremonia de gran inauguración. La Coordinadora de S.T.R.I.P.E.S., Allie Rios, dio la bienvenida a cerca de cien familias Tiger, estudiantes, personal e invitados distinguidos. Compartió: “Hoy es un día verdaderamente especial para la Wasco High School, ya que nos reunimos no solo para inaugurar un nuevo espacio en el campus, sino para celebrar el espíritu de comunidad, unidad, apoyo y compasión que define a nuestro pueblo”.

Cada estudiante tendrá acceso a ropa, zapatos, artículos de higiene y alimentos nutritivos gratuitos, sin preguntas ni juicios. Los Tigers pueden programar una cita confidencial para que se atiendan sus necesidades. Rios explicó que muchas familias de Wasco trabajan largas horas en empleos exigentes, haciendo innumerables sacrificios por sus hijos. Sin embargo, Wasco es una familia que se apoya mutuamente, y el Centro de Bienestar Tiger es otro ejemplo de ello en acción. Antes de la gran inauguración, el Centro de Bienestar Tiger ya había atendido a más de 20 estudiantes. Además de ropa escolar y para entrevistas, el Closet de Tilly ofrece atuendos para el Snowball (el baile de graduación de Wasco High) y vestimenta profesional para entrevistas.
